Washington U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse announces his retirement
Newhouse was among the group of House Republicans to vote in favor of impeaching Donald Trump in 2021.
In 2021, Dan Newhouse made headlines by being among the slate of Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives to vote for the impeachment of Donald Trump following the riot at the U.S. Capitol. Despite being a target of ire and coordinated efforts from Trump and his allies to defeat him, Newhouse has won two more terms in Congress since then. But Newhouse is now evidently ready to move on to other things.
Newhouse has announced that he does not intend to stand as a candidate for re-election in 2026. In his statement, Newhouse expressed gratitude to his family, constituents and colleagues on both sides of the aisle. He also indicated that he would continue to be active in public service in another form.
Holding his seat via the 4th District of Washington, located in the state’s central region, Newhouse was elected to the United States House of Representatives for the first time in 2014. Prior to that, he won four campaigns for the Washington House of Representatives in the 15th District before being appointed as Director of the State Department of Agriculture by Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire in 2009.
Daniel Milton Newhouse is a native of Sunnyside, Washington and a graduate of Washington State University. His father Irv was the Minority Leader of the State House of Representatives from 1975 to 1977 and later spent nearly 20 years as a Washington State Senator.
In 1982, the younger Newhouse married Carol Hammond. The couple would have two children before Carol passed away from cancer. Newhouse later married Joan Galvin in a ceremony held in the Congressional Prayer Room at the United States Capitol.
