Texas U.S. Representative Troy Nehls announces his retirement
Nehls is Chairman of the House Transportation Subcommittee on Aviation.
Troy Nehls is a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from Texas. He recently announced that he would not run for re-election to Congress in 2026.
Nehls won a seat in the House from the 22nd District of Texas for the first time in 2020. He has been re-elected twice since then.
Earlier in his career, Nehls was a police officer in Fox Lake, Wisconsin in the Milwaukee area and in Richmond, Texas. Eventually, he was elected as a Constable in Fort Bend County, Texas in 2004 and 2008, followed by winning races to be its Sheriff in 2012 and 2016.
Nehls is a native of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. He graduated from Dodgeland High School in nearby Juneau before attending the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac, Moraine Park Technical College, Liberty University and the University of Houston-Downtown.
Additionally, Nehls served in the United States Army with the Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command. He was deployed as part of the NATO Implementation Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War. Nehls retired with the rank of Major. Military decorations he received include the Bronze Star Medal.
Nehls’ father Edwin served with the Eighth Army in the Korean War. The elder Nehls received the Distinguished Service Cross, second only to the Medal of Honor, and a Purple Heart for his actions during the aftermath of the Battle of Pork Chop Hill. He retired as a Sergeant First Class before becoming Sheriff of Dodge County, Wisconsin.
Among Troy Nehls’ siblings are his brothers Todd and Trever. Todd Nehls was also the longtime Dodge County Sheriff. Meanwhile, Trever likewise was a Fort Bend County Constable and was a candidate for Sheriff in 2020 and for County Judge in 2022. Both held the rank of Colonel in the Army.
