Longtime Nevada U.S. Representative Mark Amodei announces his retirement
Amodei was previously President Pro Tempore of the State Senate.
Mark Amodei has been a Nevada legislator at either the state or federal level for nearly 30 years. But he is now apparently ready to exit the public stage.
Amodei has announced that he will not run for re-election to the United States House of Representatives this year. He originally won his Congressional seat via the 2nd District of Nevada in a 2011 special election following the resignation of Dean Heller and has been re-elected seven times.
Prior to that, Amodei was briefly a candidate in the Republican primary for one of Nevada’s United States Senate seats in 2010 before withdrawing his name from consideration. Shortly thereafter, he had a stint as the Chairman of the state chapter of the Republican Party.
In 1996, Amodei was elected to the Nevada State Assembly from the 40th District. Two years later, he won a Nevada Senate seat from the 17th District for the first time. Amodei eventually became the President Pro Tempore of the Senate from 2003 until 2005.
A native of Carson City, Nevada, Mark Amodei was voted as President of his high school class. He later graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno and the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law.
Afterward, Amodei served in the United States Army, reaching the rank of Captain. Decorations he received during his military career included the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal.
