Ex-Majority Leader Will Mortenson announces his retirement from the South Dakota House of Representatives
Mortenson is currently Co-Chairman of the South Dakota Legislature Committee on State-Tribal Relations.
Will Mortenson is a high-profile politician in the State of South Dakota. But he is set to be going down a different path in the near future.
Mortenson has announced that he will not run for another term in the South Dakota House of Representatives this year. A Republican, Mortenson was first elected to the House from the 24th District in 2020. From 2023 until 2025, he held the position of Majority Leader.
A native of Pierre, South Dakota, Mortenson graduated from T.F. Riggs High School followed by the University of South Dakota and the University of Virginia School of Law. Earlier in his career, Mortenson was a staffer for State Public Utilities Commissioner and future U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson and Governor Dennis Daugaard.
Since 2015, Will Mortenson has been married to his wife Shuree, with whom he has two children. Mortenson is a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Native American Tribe.
